What: South Side Community Art Center’s 70th Anniversary events

Why: Funds raised will continue the Center's efforts in seeking out and teaching individuals and young artists; provide gallery space to exhibit the works of artists for the community's viewership; to develop a body of collectors of African American art; and to serve as a reference for African American artists throughout the greater Chicago metropolitan area and surrounding communities.

The Main Event: Columbia, South Carolina’s most critically acclaimed Off the Wall & Onto the Stage: Dancing the Art of Jonathan Green, performed by the Columbia City Ballet,  comes to Chicago on February 27, 2010 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. The ballet, called “…ingenious…” and “…fabulous…” by The New York Times, uses William Starrett’s choreography to bring twenty - two paintings by internationally recognized artist Jonathan Green to life on the stage. It is art rooted in the Gullah heritage, a heritage wrapped in themes of family and community, personal identity and expression, race and culture.

K-12 Educational Outreach - February to May 2010

The educational outreach component for students will use the ballet as an example of interactive arts collaboration. Classrooms will use interpretive exercises to explore Jonathan Green's work through dance as showcased in the ballet. Central to the curriculum will be an educational guide and CD that put the performance in historical context and bring awareness and appreciation for a way of life and a rich piece of American culture rooted in authentic African traditions. The curriculum will also allow students to explore the process of creating interpretive images, dance and music. Contact Diane at DDCarr56@ymail.com for more information.

Goals

  • To introduce the Chicago area and various communities to the art of Jonathan Green and the Gullah culture and heritage
  • To enhance students’ cultural knowledge and elicit social change

  • To encourage individuals to explore the inherent ability of the arts to illuminate aspects of one’s self and community
  • To allow students to use their intuition and imagination to develop a foundation for connecting the arts and society

 Target Audience:

  • K-12, university and city college students, and dance schools.
  • Diverse population with emphasis on the African American community.
